Fact is- it is beneficial to hop for the defender. It buys you more time to react 2. If the hopper is lucky, attacker will be reloading while trying to finish him off 3. I have no problem with the idea behind hopping- its an evasive maneuver. My only gripe is how silly it looks. I wish there was someway to turn a HOP into a dive move or some kind of evasion tactic that doesn't look as silly. It is not unrealistic to think that a future soldier would dive out of harms way and return fire, killing his attacker.
This is essentially what hopping accomplishes. MasterCheef , Feb 15, Didn't PS1 have stamina for jumping specifically because of bunny hopping? I never played it beyond a few hours but when I noticed the stamina cost for jumping I figured it was to prevent bunny hopping. Not saying that's the solution in PS2, I like the ideas in this thread much more.
The only real problem with it is that TR benefit from it way more than the other two. Lets focus on the term and ignore the fact that client prediction sucks in this game, and that jumping alters hit detection! That client prediction is way off from where we see ourselves on the screen and where the enemy sees us, so that we die after getting behind cover! That jumping adds a new portion to the vector that throws off client prediction even more!
Yay for being stuck on the term! Good job! You're a politician already! Iksniljiksul , Feb 14, Bunny hopping is the name of the actual practice of repeatedly jumping up and down to avoid fire, simply because they are jumping up and down like a rabbit. Yes, the name was coined in the original CS where they had some absolute garbage coding which allowed speed boost, bullet dodging etc.

Another main difference is that the most advantageous method for strafe synchronization in Portal 2 is slightly different from the most advantageous methods in other Gold Source games. More specifically, one will not properly accelerate if strafe key presses are exactly correspondent with the direction of mouse movements.
Circle jumping , also known as Acceljumping or Prestrafing is a way of gaining a lot of pre-bhop speed while on the ground, and then jumping. To perform a circle jump, you need to combine both forwards walking W and strafing A or D , while also turning your mouse and then jumping at the right moment. Imagine walking a curve and then jumping at the end of it. Make sure you don't turn your mouse too fast or too slow as that will only slow you down.
This technique is the same in Source Engine, except in Half-Life 2 you'd also need to sprint to get even more speed out of it. The circle jumping technique in Portal 2 involves the same mouse movements, but only holding one strafe key i. You do not hold it whilst performing the mouse movements. In the Orange Box engine you cannot perform normal circlejumps, because whenever you jump the ABH mechanic slows you down. However if you perform a circlejump backwards and release the S key just before jumping you get accelerated backwards.
