And though May is never mentioned by name on any of these songs, perhaps one is to assume that nostalgia-laden, first-person accounts like the opening "Under an Old Umbrella" or the rapturous "Calico" are intended to feature May as narrator.
Also a talented visual artist, Nadler naturally fills her lyrics with color, and these songs abound with azure skies, turquoise eyes, and especially ruby red blood. On tracks like "Yellow Lights" and "Mr. John Lee Velveteen Rose " Nadler fearlessly enters traditional murder ballad territory, exquisitely depicting a world where love is forever shadowed by loss. Curiously, for the dramatic "Lily, Henry, and the Willow Trees" the album's lyric sheet includes a final, particularly gory verse that leaves little doubt as to the fate of poor Lily.
Perhaps finding these lines out of keeping with her music's otherwise deft, subtle touch, Nadler leaves them unsung, one of the few instances on this enthralling album where she pulls any punches whatsoever. Skip to content Search query All Results. Pitchfork is the most trusted voice in music.

And torquoise was the color of his eyes, and bitter wine the color of my high He was tall, gracefully, he held my empty fingers He was tall, gracefully, he filled my cold hard body And I met him yesterday under the skies of azure And I met him yesterday under my old umbrella And torquoise was the color of his eyes, and bitter wine the color of my high.

My Little Lark Sooner or later, I will see you or something, oh we talked in the night to the sound of a broken swing In the beginning stars I would fancy and we'd rock in the night to the sound of the surf crashing Further and further are you growing now further and further is the spark further and further are you growing now further and further My Little Lark Ode to my sweet one, and the days of the long run, and the frolicking among the fields of green and blue, where did you fly to little blue?
Sooner or later, I'll be seeing you in all the markings on the wall sooner or later, will you come to me incarnate in the body of a willow tree where did you fly to little blue?
In the time of the lorry low Driving to your home again, forgive me to the rain. It's true that I willed and wished for you, each night upon my bed. Driving down your road again, a winding road of green, your face a distant memory, an autumn leaf in spring. Following the signs of you, as sparrows flock around, I will always drink to you, when entering this town Grievous angels laugh at you for leaving me to be, I see your face in every blue-ish sky and road and sea 'Twas a long time, in the time of the lorry low 'Twas a long time, was a claw in the days of old.
